FIGHT LIGHT

Forget body mass and big muscles. When male Augrabies flat lizards (Platysaurus broadleyi) size each other up for a brawl, they look at the ultraviolet (UV) color of their opponent´s throat, according to a study published online 3 January in Biology Letters. Researchers found that when they blocked this UV patch with sunscreen, lizards were much more likely to be challenged by their foes. The results suggest that such coloration can help males maintain dominance--as long as they avoid the SPF 50.

COSMIC TORNADO

Cosmic tornado. The tantrums of an infant star have carved a striking helical shock wave in space. NASA´s Spitzer Space Telescope found the glowing infrared feature in a fertile nursery of more than 100 stars about 550 light-years away. Blasting downward from an unseen active star above the image, this jet may trace out the poorly understood magnetic fields that probably wind through the churning cloud of gas and dust. Astronomers released the false-color image 12 January at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

DOUBLE VISION

When it comes to tracking geomagnetic storms, two eyes are better than one. The pair of Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft--launched on 25 October 2006--have imaged two massive streams of hot plasma streaking away from the sun (blue) at more than 1000 kilometers per second. The spacecraft will soon be respectively leading and trailing Earth, as it orbits the sun, at sufficient distances to provide 3-D tracking--and enhanced forecasting--of such solar ejections, which threaten satellites, radio communications, and GPS operations.

WINGED WONDER

The first fossil of a gliding lizard has been found in northeastern China, and judging by its wing design, it was an ace. Rather than using modified forelimbs for powered flight (as contemporary pterodactyls did), 15-centimeter-long Xianglong zhaoi sailed with a pair of webby wings built on supersized ribs, leaving its limbs free for grabbing and climbing trees, researchers report online the week of 19 March in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Despite its fine features, the 100-million-year-old glider seems to have been an early experiment: birds, which would soon dominate the skies, grew wings from their forelimbs, and the only gliding reptile around today, the draco lizard, has wings that are less aerodynamic.

HUSEYIN HILMI BIN SA'ÎD
AHMET on 03/22/2007 at 7:03pm (UTC)
He disseminated throughout the world his Turkish, German, French, English and offset-reproduced Arabic books and received thousands of letters expressing appreciation, congratulations and thanks. Some of his works were translated into Japanese, Asian and African languages. He always said that he had neither the ability nor efficiency, and that all the services do ne were the results of the spiritual help and grace of Hadrat Sayyid 'Abdulhakîm Effendi and the blessings ensuing from his excessive love and respect for the scholars of Islam.Hüseyn Hilmi Effendi constantly said that he found the taste in the suhba and words of Sayyid 'Abdulhakîm Effendi in nothing else and that the most pleasant moments he enjoyed were when he remembered those sweet days he had spent with Sayyid 'Abdulhakîm Effendi. He said his nasal bones ached out of the grief of separation and yearning when he remembered those days.

SAYYID 'ABDULHAKIM AL-ARWASI
AHMET on 03/22/2007 at 7:03pm (UTC)
Sayyid 'Abdulhakim Effendi was very profound in religious knowledge and in ma'arif of tasawwuf. University members, scientists and statesmen would come to ask difficult questions that they thought to be unanswerable but would go out in contentment because they would find the answers -before they would ask for them- within an hour of his sohbat (company, preaching). Those who won his tawajjuh (attention, patronage) and love would see innumerable karamat. He was extremely modest and unperentious. He was never heard to say, "I personally..." He said, "We would not be taken into account... We cannot understand what those superiors have written. We read them only to get blessed with them." Whereas, he, too, was an expert in the same knowledge. Husain Hilmi Effendi's father-in-law, Yusuf Ziya' Akisik, one of his intimates and the Director of the Karamursal Textile Factory, said, "I kissed the palm of 'Abdulhakim Effendi in a dream and went to his house at Ayyub Sultan to tell him about my dream the following day, I bowed to kiss his hand as we always did when we met him. He stretched forward his blessed hand, the palm facing upward, and said, 'Kiss it the way you did last night,' and, as an act of kindness, he explained many things."

MAWLANA KHALID AL-BAGHDADÎ
AHMET on 03/22/2007 at 7:03pm (UTC)
Hadrat Mawlana Khalid, who was the qutb of the thirteenth century of Islam, had been to India (Hindustan) where he had the honor of attending the presence of Ghulam-i 'Ali 'Abdullah ad-Dahlawi, After attaining the virtues (fadl) and perfection (kamalat) proper to and worthy of him, he returned home, Baghdad, to instruct (irshad) human servants of Allahu ta'ala. Since the entire world was illuminated by the anwar (spiritual lights) that radiated from Mawlana's hearts, Sayyid 'Abdullah, who had become a friend of his while they were studying, visited him in Sulaimaniyya and attained perfection at his sohbat and became a Khalifa al-akmal of his. He told Hadrat Mawlana about the extraordinarily high qualities of his nephew Sayyid Taha. Mawlana ordered him to bring his nephew to him during his next visit. Sayyid 'Abdullah took Sayyid Taha to Baghdad; as soon as Hadrat Mawlana saw Sayyid Taha he ordered him to go abruptly to Hadrat 'Abdal-Qadir al-Geilani 's shrine to perform istikhara (divining by dream). Hadrat 'Abd al-Qadir al-Geilani informed him that, though his own way (Tariqa) was great, there remained no experts in it at that time, and that Mawlana was the most perfect guide of his time, and ordered him to go to him at once. Upon this spiritual order, Sayyid Taha worked for two suluks, that is, eighty days, near Mawlana and later went to the town of Barda Sur. When Sayyid 'Abdullah passed away, he emigrated to the town of Nehri and began instructing. For forty-two years he emitted faid to his disciples there. Lovers from everywhere gathered like moths around this source of light. The English translation of his book (Itiqad-nama) called (Îmân and Islam) is published by Hakikat Bookstore.

IMÂM AR-RABBÂNÎ "QUDDISA SIRRUH"
AHMET on 03/22/2007 at 7:02pm (UTC)
Our Prophet 'sall-Allâhu 'alaihi wa sallam' stated, "Of my Ummat (Muslims), there will come someone nicknamed Sila. Through his shafâ'at (intercession with Allâhu ta'âlâ for the slaves), many people will enter Paradise." This hadîth-i-sherîf is written in the book Jam'ul-jawâmî, by Imâm Suyûtî 'rahimahullâhu ta'âlâ'. Providing an extensive explanation for the Awliyâ's words on 'Wahdat-i-wujûd', Imâm Rabbânî 'quddisa sirruh' proved that they were compatible with Islam, and combined the two very vast Islamic oceans, i.e. the Ahkâm-i-islâmiyya (the Islamic principles, tenets, acts of worship, commandments and prohibitions, ritual practices, etc.), and Tasawwuf (knowledge pertaining to heart and soul; orders, paths, methods and techniques for the purification and improvement of the heart and soul), (which had hitherto been considered apart from each other). This won him the epithet Sila, (which means reunion; combiner). One of his letters ends with the prayer of thanksgiving, "May hamd (praise and gratitude) be to Allâhu ta'âlâ, who has made me a sila between two oceans!" He was known with this nickname among his companions. No one before him had won the epithet 'Sila', which exists literally in the hadîth-i-sherîf giving the good news. It is a fact in the sunlight that the epithet had been meant for Imâm Rabbânî.
